Media Arabic Vocabulary – Dawn, Spread, Era

We are starting a series of articles, where we will post miscellaneous Arabic words which are commonly used in Arabic media. The words will be provided along with their root letters, meanings and some example sentences. Examples of usages of these words in the holy Quran and hadith (narrations from the holy prophet and his pure household) will also be given.

1) يَبْزُغُ

بَزَغَ، يَبْزُغ، بُزُوْغ

To break forth, come out, to dawn (day)

ويبزغ يوم الاثنين من دونها

“And Monday will dawn without it“

This root has appeared twice in the holy Quran, in successive verses – with regards to the rising of the moon and sun:

فَلَمَّا رَأَى الْقَمَرَ بَازِغًا قَالَ هَٰذَا رَبِّي

“Then, when he saw the moon rising, he said, ‘This is my Lord!’” (6:77)

فَلَمَّا رَأَى الشَّمْسَ بَازِغَةً قَالَ هَٰذَا رَبِّي هَٰذَا أَكْبَرُ

“Then, when he saw the sun rising, he said, ‘This is my Lord! This is bigger!’” (6:78)

2)  ذُيُوع

ذَاْع، يَذِيْع، ذُيُوْع

To spread, get about, circulate, be spread, be disseminated, be or become widespread

لم يتحدث رفيق خوري طوال نهار أمس بعد ذيوع الخبر لأحد

“Rafiq Khoury did not speak to anyone the whole day yesterday, after the news spread.”

This root has appeared once in the holy Quran:

وَإِذَا جَاءَهُمْ أَمْرٌ مِنَ الْأَمْنِ أَوِ الْخَوْفِ أَذَاعُوا بِهِ

” And when there comes to them information about security or fear, they spread it around ” (4:38)

3) حِقْبَة

حِقْبَة، ج حِقَب / حِقَبَاْت / أَحْقَاْب

long time, stretch of time, time period, era

وكنت أنا نفسي شاهداً على تلك الحقبة من الازدهار المبشّر

“I myself was a witness to that era of auspicious prosperity“.

This root has appeared twice in the holy Quran:

لَابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا

“Remaining in it for ages.” (78:23)

وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِفَتَاهُ لَا أَبْرَحُ حَتَّىٰ أَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ أَوْ أَمْضِيَ حُقُبًا

“Musa said to his lad, ‘I will go on [journeying] until I have reached the confluence of the two seas, or have spent a long time [travelling].’” (18:60)
